Expired Auctions, Last Chance & Closeout Explained

When a domain expires because it hasn't been renewed, it does not immediately become available for anyone else to register. Instead, it can pass through several stages, each providing a different opportunity to acquire the domain.

Expired Auction

After a domain expires and completes the applicable grace period, an eligible domain registered through ZillionKingHost may be offered through an expired-domain auction.

The auction works like a standard marketplace auction:

• The auction runs for a defined period.

• Buyers compete by placing bids.

• The highest valid bid wins, subject to any applicable reserve price and marketplace rules.

The Original Owner Still Comes First

Expired-domain auctions have an important distinction: the original registrant may still have the right to renew and reclaim the domain during the applicable redemption or recovery period.

This protects domain owners from permanently losing a domain because of an accidental missed renewal.

If the original owner successfully reclaims the domain before the marketplace transaction is completed, the auction will be cancelled and any applicable bid authorization or payment will be released according to the marketplace rules.

You will not be required to pay for a domain that can no longer be transferred to you.

Because of this possibility, an expired-domain auction should never be considered a guaranteed transfer until the domain has successfully completed the required process.

Last Chance

Domains that complete their auction without receiving qualifying bids may move to the Last Chance stage.

During this period, the domain may be offered at a fixed, reduced price for a limited time.

This can be an opportunity to acquire a domain that attracted little or no auction activity without having to compete against multiple bidders.

Closeout

Closeout is the final marketplace stage before a domain is released.

The price may decrease according to a predetermined schedule as the domain approaches its release date.

The first eligible buyer to complete the purchase at the current price gets the opportunity to acquire the domain, subject to the applicable registration and transfer rules.

If the domain remains unsold throughout the closeout period, it may eventually be released back to the public registry. Once released, it becomes available for registration according to the registry's normal rules and may be registered by anyone.

These tend to attract attention to desirable domains, which can lead to competitive bidding and higher final prices.

Last Chance
A quieter alternative for domains that did not receive sufficient auction interest, often at a fixed reduced price.

Closeout

Don't Ignore Domain History

A domain's previous history matters.

An expired domain may have previously been used for:

• Trademark-related disputes
